We are looking for skilled Data Engineer for Data Migration to BigQuery project!

About the role

The project’s main goal is to execute a complete migration of an existing Data Warehouse (DWH) from Azure Synapse to a modern data platform built on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), with BigQuery at its core. This strategic initiative aims to address significant limitations of the current system, such as poor scalability, lack of support for modern workloads like Large Language Models (LLMs) and unstructured data, and insufficient data governance capabilities.

The client operates within the insurance industry. Has distributed teams across the UK, with 120 employees in total.

Project duration:  7+-month project (with a high probability of extension)

Start day: ASAP.

This is a fully remote position. The only requirement is for candidates to be able to work in the GMT+1 timezone. English is the only required language.

The project involves a big data warehouse migration with a strong focus on data governance.

Qualifications

  • At least 3–5 years of experience in Data Engineering.
  • Experience with: BigQuery, Dataplex, Dataflow, Cloud Composer, DBT (dbt Core).
  • Proven experience in designing, implementing, testing, and migrating data warehouses.
  • Experience with implementing robust data governance frameworks.
  • Familiarity with GCP best practices, Infrastructure as Code (IaC) (especially Terraform), robust security principles, and a modular approach to data management.
  • Understanding of CI/CD workflows for both infrastructure and data platform changes.
  • Excellent client-facing skills.
  • Fluent English

Beneficial Experience:

  • Experience with Azure Synapse due to the migration context.
  • Experience with Kubernetes and Python, as Cloud Composer and DBT Core leverage these environments.

*Prior migration experience from Azure Synapse to BigQuery isn’t a strict requirement, but candidates should have experience with data warehouse migrations in general.

Responsibilities

  • Leading the end-to-end migration of a Data Warehouse from Azure Synapse to Google Cloud Platform (GCP), with BigQuery as its central component.
  • Designing and building the new GCP data platform foundation, which includes provisioning a secure GCP Landing Zone using Terraform, configuring the BigQuery dataset with a three-layered architecture (Ingestion, Staging, Analytical), and setting up Cloud Composer for orchestration.
  • Developing custom migration tooling to analyze and translate stored procedures and views from Azure Synapse to BigQuery standard SQL and DBT models. You’ll also execute the iterative migration of raw data and complex transformation logic into BigQuery using DBT models.
  • Implementing robust data governance using Dataplex, which involves establishing a searchable Data Catalog, setting up automated data quality rules within DBT and Dataplex, and ensuring data security through PII tagging, column-level security, and data masking in BigQuery.
  • Ensuring a smooth transition through comprehensive documentation, operationalizing CI/CD pipelines for both infrastructure and data model changes, and providing training for the client’s team.
